The Nigerian Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, 15 July 2025, as a public holiday to honor the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025, in London. This declaration comes on the heels of a seven-day national mourning period ordered by President Bola Tinubu, with flags flying at half-mast across the country.
🕊️ Why the Holiday?
- The holiday honors Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria—as both a military head of state (1983–1985) and a democratically elected president (2015–2023) .
- Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the day “provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld”.
🏘️ Regional Observance
- State and regional governments, particularly in the Northwest, including Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, and others, also declared Tuesday a holiday to pay respects ahead of the burial in Buhari’s hometown of Daura
